Sushi

Sushi is perhaps the most recognized Japanese dish globally. It consists of vinegared rice accompanied by various ingredients such as raw fish, vegetables, and sometimes tropical fruits.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 2.5 cups water
  • 1/3 cup rice vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Assorted sashimi (e.g., salmon, tuna, shrimp)
  • Nori (seaweed sheets)
  • Soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi for serving

Preparation Steps

  1. Prepare the rice: Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain the rice and place it in a rice cooker with 2.5 cups of water. Cook according to the rice cooker’s instructions.
  2. Season the rice: In a small saucepan, combine rice vinegar, sugar, and salt over low heat. Stir until dissolved and remove from heat. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and gradually mix in the vinegar mixture with a wooden spoon. Allow it to cool.
  3. Assemble the sushi: Place a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi rolling mat. Wet your hands with water and spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving an inch at the top edge. Layer your sashimi ingredients in the center of the rice.
  4. Roll the sushi: Starting from the bottom, roll the mat over the sushi tightly. Use your fingers to apply pressure while rolling, ensuring the sushi holds its shape. Seal the edge of the nori with a little water.
  5. Slice and serve: With a sharp knife, slice the roll into bite-sized pieces. Serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi on the side.
