Tempura : Step-By-Step Recipe

Tempura is a dish of battered and deep-fried vegetables or seafood, known for its light texture and crispy coating.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 egg
  • Assorted vegetables (e.g., sweet potatoes, zucchini, bell peppers)
  • Shrimp or white fish (optional)
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Dipping sauce (ten tsuyu or tempura sauce)

Preparation Steps

  1. Prepare the batter: In a bowl, whisk together the cold water and egg. Gradually add flour, mixing lightly. The batter should remain lumpy for a lighter texture.
  2. Heat the oil: In a deep pot, heat oil to 350°F (175°C).
  3. Prepare the ingredients: Slice vegetables into thin strips. If using seafood, devein the shrimp or slice the fish as desired.
  4. Fry the tempura: Dip the vegetables or seafood into the batter, allowing excess batter to drip off. Carefully add them to the hot oil in batches. Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Drain and serve: Remove the tempura from the oil and drain on paper towels. Serve immediately with dipping sauce.
